Small is the new green

Increasing environmental awareness along with economic and demographic trends favor smaller house sizes. Seattle and Portland are two cities which allow backyard cottages up to 800 sq. ft. in size. These small houses provide opportunities for families, while increasing housing stock density and diversity. bellevue backyard cottages ( detached ADU's)

Bellevue is considering adding a backyard cottage ( detached accessory dwelling unit ) provision to their zoning code. Most likely they will be limited to 800 sq. ft. in size or a percentage of the floor area of the primary residence. As with most other jurisdictions owner occupancy will be required in either the primary residence or the cottage. They want to know what the public thinks and they are conducting a survey.
